CHARACTER
Name: Minako Arisato
Canon: Persona 3 (Portable version)
Age: 16
Timeline: the train ride home from the full moon event on July 7th

Personality: As a 'silent' player character protagonist, Minako's personality is to a certain extent different for every player and game playthrough. However, she is not by any means an empty husk to be projected onto. Every person is born with a card in the Major Arcana that represents their life journey, and Minako's is The Fool, the 0 card, representing infinite potential at the start or end of a journey. This relationship to the journey of the soul allows Minako to embody the aspects of any card in the Arcana. The result of this spiritual flexibility is that she can adapt herself to understand and compliment any person she interacts with, by emulating and embodying the aspects of their own Arcana card.

Minako is thereby the textbook definition of an Extrovert. She gains energy from being around people, and there's usually enough of that to begin with! She's not necessarily a talkative girl, unless you want her to be, but she's not afraid to show her feelings. Usually preferring to listen rather than talk, she loves nothing more in the world than to learn about other people and figure out new ways to make them happy, even subtle ways that might surprise people with their impact. She lives for positive interaction.

Along the same vein, Minako is a very intense empath. She is sensitive to the emotions of others, and it can affect her emotional state significantly. She uses this talent to gauge how people are responding to her, and adjust her attitude and actions accordingly. It can be a curse, however, in that she can't really turn it off and her own thoughts and feelings can end up being highly influenced by others, including people who may not be good for her to be emotionally fused with. In truth, she almost has no real set personality because she adapts it to every social situation in order to mesh as well as possible with every person she meets. It's not a flawless litmus, however, and she does make mistakes, say the wrong thing, or otherwise upset someone else. She doesn't usually respond to these kinds of failures well, and can stagnate badly when a problem in a relationship persists. In many social situations in the game, she's has choices, determined by the player, of what to say or do. Some of these choices lead to more positive interaction with the other characters involved and some cause the relationships to strain. Since Minako does not reach her full potential as the hero of the game without maxing all of her social links, it is logical to assume that the most "correct" response in every social situation is the most canon.

This lack of personality is strongest in the years between having Death sealed inside her and her return to Iwatodai. Once returning, and signing the contract that binds her to the fate of free will, she makes friends with the members of SEES, who help her remember who she was and could be if she let herself be her own person. She develops more of her own personality over the course of the canon, and the things that were always "her" and present in small amounts become more pronounced.

Those few things she does carry with her into almost every social landscape, despite her flexible tarot aspect are a reflection of the default male protagonist's as well as a compliment. She's his foil as the 22nd aspected Fool to his 0th aspect. She has a sense of humor and can deliver witty lines, either laughing or totally dry, when she feels it will be well-received. She is implied in her wider range of response options to have an expressive face, and can be very emotional under the right circumstances. She is also a born leader, comfortable taking responsibility for others as well as her own actions. No sacrifice is too big or too small for her to make for the sake of a friend. She cares too much about other people to make any decision but the best one for them, and people find it easy to trust her. Conversely, she trusts others easily, and is determined to see the best in them, and that kind of perspective on people comes easily to her. It is difficult for her to find something truly negative about people to say, unless she considers them a threat to her friends. It's an easy thing to become Minako's friend and a very difficult one to become her enemy. All of these things are true for her male counterpart, but expressed in slightly different ways. Where she hides her burdens behind smiles and enthusiasm he hides behind an impossibly neutral expression.

Background: Her personal history in canon is practically the same as the default male character's. The differences between them lie in their presented reactions to the trauma of their childhood and the choices they make in Iwatodai.

While Minato, the male character, makes social links with only the female friends in SEES, Minako has social links with every member of SEES, and a few other differences. Minako can have either Minato's Velvet room attendant Elizabeth, or Theodore, depending on the answer to a question Igor asks her. If Minako makes the correct choices, she can save the lives of Shinjiro Aragaki, and Chidori Yoshino, who are both doomed to death no matter what in the male character's route. The events of The Answer in Persona 3 FES are not available, and presumably do not occur, in Persona 3 Portable. The consequences of that are left up to the imagination of the fans.

Abilities: Minako is generally very athletic, which we know because of how slow she is to tire even from the start when battling and climbing Tartarus, and how easily she keeps up with star athletes in her volleyball tennis team. She learns how to wield a naginata as a basic weapon, sometimes swinging joke weapons like hockey sticks, suggesting she may have played hockey on her youth to develop that strength and endurance. As a Fool arcana Wild Card, she has the ability to fuse, hold, and control multiple personas from all the different arcana. She has the potential to discover 170 different personas, though she can only hold a limited amount at a time. She calls upon these personas with the use of her Evoker, which is a gun shaped object that she has to seemingly shoot herself in the head to use. These personas have a wide range of abilities, including healing, lowering and raising attack, defense, agility, physical attacks, and a list of elemental attacks (wind, ice, fire, lightning, light, dark). She's about level 25-30 at the time she's taken, and can therefore only call on personas up to that level.

Knowing now that Theodore, her attendant, is in the city already with the Compendium, she will be able to summon and store any persona she might need, if she can find him and pay the fee.

First Person: Boss Fight thread at her other game's Halloween event.

Third Person: Another successful mission completed, another menace of a shadow destroyed. Minako's body felt like jelly from fatigue but her heart was soaring. Her team did well together, and everyone got off with nary a scratch. Sure, there was a bit of a bump along the way, with that whole mind-controlling thing, but no harm done, and they got free of it well enough. It was Fuuka's first mission and she was already proud of her and prepared to tell the newest member of S.E.E.S how well she had done when they got back.

There was no reason to rush, and the Dark Hour ended as everyone regrouped outside the hotel, so the team boarded the train to ride back to the dorm and save them the walk. Junpei made a lame crack and Minako laughed. She felt even closer to all of them after the night's events, and that feeling warmed her chest and made her already easy laughter that much easier. Yukari rolled her eyes but she smiled. Everyone safe and content, Minako slid into a chair on the train and lolled bonelessly. She drifted off to sleep with the tired voices of her friends in her ears.

Her mind and eyes were both bleary when she woke again. The first thing she registered was light, and she wondered if they had left her on the train until the sun came up. A few choice options for revenge pranks started to surface, but fizzled into nothing as she realized she was still riding on the moving train.

No, a moving train. Suddenly fully alert, Minako jumped to her feet and pressed herself against the window. Nothing she saw outside was familiar. No part of this scenery was Iwatodai. That didn't make any sense. She rapped on the glass, as though that would give her an answer.

"Igor?" Perhaps this was some other strange trick of the Velvet room. But there was no attendant or Igor to answer her call. In fact there appeared to be absolutely nobody on the train but her. It couldn't be another shadow trick could it? It was broad daylight, or so it appeared. Minako didn't feel any sort of pressure on her mind like she had in the hotel, but in case she was being listened to she declares her thoughts. "I swear on my life, if anything has happened to my friends..."

Checking herself again, she found her evoker still in its holster, her healing items still on her, and her naginata leaning against the seat where she remembers putting it. Resolute, she lifts the weapon and braces it behind her. Whatever new ordeal was awaiting her, she would face it and best it. First, she will see where this train leads.
